SOUTH THAILAND PHOTO TOUR

This photo tour focuses on photographing the colorful birds of South Thailand during their breeding season.  Highest on the list of our targets are four species of Pitta we should photograph.  These are the Blue-winged, Banded, Hooded and Mangrove Pittas.  Other target families include Broadbills, Kingfishers, Hornbills and Sunbirds.  Of course we will photograph other birds, mammals and reptiles during the tour.  South Thailand is quite warm and humid this time of year so be prepared for that.  You should come home with images of a lot of beautiful and difficult species.

Maximum participants: 6 photographers, 8 including nonphotographer spouses/companions.

Cost and Logistics

Cost is $4,950 with a $500 single supplement.  Nonphotographer spouse/companion is $4,450.  This includes all lodging, meals, drinking water, land transportation, guiding and instruction.  It does not include airfare to get to Phuket, Thailand, other drinks and items of a personal nature such as tips and laundry.

Itinerary

June 15th – Arrival to Phuket, Thailand airport, transfer to a 4-star hotel near the airport and beach.  Hotel: 4-star hotel

June 16th – Morning bird photography in the garden, then check out and drive to the Phang Nga Mangroves area.  Check in to our hotel then we will have an afternoon at the mangroves.  There is a nice mangrove boardwalk here.  Our main targets here are several mangrove specialties including Mangrove Pitta, Brown-winged and Ruddy Kingfishers and Mangrove Whistler.  Hotel: A small, comfortable hotel in Phangnga.

June 17th – We will have another morning photographing on the boardwalk and entrance road.  This is also a good spot for Black and Red Broadbill and Chestnut-winged Malkoha.  Then we transfer to our next lodge which is near Sri Phang Nga National Park.  Afternoon bird photography in the park.  This is one of several locations that we have a good chance to photograph Blue-winged Pitta.  Hotel: A very nice hotel near the park.

June 18th – This morning, we will photograph from a blind where the main target is the gorgeous Banded Pitta.  We also have a good chance for Hooded Pitta in this park.  We will check the usual day roost of Gould’s Frogmounth.  Hotel: A very nice hotel near the park.

June 19th – This morning, we will sit by the stream to photograph the lovely Chestnut-naped Forktail as well as spend more time with the pittas.  Then we will transfer to beautiful Khao Sok National Park.  Khao Sok has beautiful limestone cliffs rising from a turquoise clear colored lake.  In the afternoon we will have our first boat trip to explore the lake.  The lake is good for raptors including Gray-headed Fish Eagle and Oriental Hobby.  Hotel: A nice, floating hotel on the lake.

June 20th – We will have two boat trips on the lake today.  Our targets include Stork-billed and Blue-eared Kingfishers.  With luck we will photograph the amazing Helmeted and Bushy-crested Hornbills.  Hotel: A nice, floating hotel on the lake.   We have a reasonably good chance of seeing some mammals such as Asian Elephants coming down to the water to drink the afternoons.

June 21st – We will have one more morning photographing on the lake then we will check out and head to Krung Ching National Park on the eastern side of the peninsula.  Afternoon bird photograph there.  We have a good chance for two beautiful sunbirds here the Crimson and Ruby-cheeked.  Hotel: A nice lodge near the park.

June 22nd and 23rd – We have two full days of photography at Krung Ching National Park.  There is a blind here that regularly attracts some great birds including Green Broadbill, Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher and White-crowned Forktail.  Some other excellent birds at this park include Rufous-collared Kingfisher, White-crowned Hornbill and Raffles Malkoha.  Hotel: A nice lodge near the park.
