Cost and Logistics
Itinerary
June 15th – Arrival to Phuket, Thailand airport, transfer to a 4-star hotel near the airport and beach. Hotel: 4-star hotel
June 16th – Morning bird photography in the garden, then check out and drive to the Phang Nga Mangroves area. Check in to our hotel then we will have an afternoon at the mangroves. There is a nice mangrove boardwalk here. Our main targets here are several mangrove specialties including Mangrove Pitta, Brown-winged and Ruddy Kingfishers and Mangrove Whistler. Hotel: A small, comfortable hotel in Phangnga.
June 17th – We will have another morning photographing on the boardwalk and entrance road. This is also a good spot for Black and Red Broadbill and Chestnut-winged Malkoha. Then we transfer to our next lodge which is near Sri Phang Nga National Park. Afternoon bird photography in the park. This is one of several locations that we have a good chance to photograph Blue-winged Pitta. Hotel: A very nice hotel near the park.
June 18th – This morning, we will photograph from a blind where the main target is the gorgeous Banded Pitta. We also have a good chance for Hooded Pitta in this park. We will check the usual day roost of Gould’s Frogmounth. Hotel: A very nice hotel near the park.
June 19th – This morning, we will sit by the stream to photograph the lovely Chestnut-naped Forktail as well as spend more time with the pittas. Then we will transfer to beautiful Khao Sok National Park. Khao Sok has beautiful limestone cliffs rising from a turquoise clear colored lake. In the afternoon we will have our first boat trip to explore the lake. The lake is good for raptors including Gray-headed Fish Eagle and Oriental Hobby. Hotel: A nice, floating hotel on the lake.
June 20th – We will have two boat trips on the lake today. Our targets include Stork-billed and Blue-eared Kingfishers. With luck we will photograph the amazing Helmeted and Bushy-crested Hornbills. Hotel: A nice, floating hotel on the lake. We have a reasonably good chance of seeing some mammals such as Asian Elephants coming down to the water to drink the afternoons.
June 21st – We will have one more morning photographing on the lake then we will check out and head to Krung Ching National Park on the eastern side of the peninsula. Afternoon bird photograph there. We have a good chance for two beautiful sunbirds here the Crimson and Ruby-cheeked. Hotel: A nice lodge near the park.
June 22nd and 23rd – We have two full days of photography at Krung Ching National Park. There is a blind here that regularly attracts some great birds including Green Broadbill, Rufous-backed Dwarf Kingfisher and White-crowned Forktail. Some other excellent birds at this park include Rufous-collared Kingfisher, White-crowned Hornbill and Raffles Malkoha. Hotel: A nice lodge near the park.
June 24th – One more morning photographing at the blind then we will check out and head back to the Phangnga area. We will have an afternoon trip to the boardwalk and try to catch up with the Ruddy and Brown-winged Kingfishers again among other species. Hotel: A small, comfortable hotel in Phangnga
June 25th – Morning at the boardwalk working on mangrove specialties such as Mangrove Pitta, followed by check and return to four-star hotel near the airport and beach. Afternoon bird photography there. Hotel: four-star hotel in Bangkok.
June 26th – Check out and transfer to Phuket airport for your flight home. If you want to schedule a few more days of bird and wildlife photography, you can accompany our local guide at her lodge near Keang Krachan National Park. Contact us for details.
Jure Novak
Jure Novak is a full time nature photographer, tour leader and filmmaker from Slovenia. His work is widely published in Slovenia and he is one of the filmmakers of “Wild Slovenia”, a motion picture. Jure is an excellent birder and bird guide in addition to being a very talented photographer. He uses Sony gear.
