ABOUT MONGOLIA PHOTO TOUR

This tour prioritizes photographing Snow Leopard and to some extent other mammal species such as Pallas’s Cat and Siberian Ibex.  We will spend 4 full days in the Altai Mountains, where the local guides and trackers will put up a hide when they find a Snow Leopard kill.  This is a big advantage because it allows the group not to have to hike as far (usually the hide will be less than a km from the road) and allows the group to get closer to the Leopard (usual distance is about 100 meters).  We also spend five days and 4 nights in the Margaz Mountains which are good for a variety of wildlife including Snow Leopards, Pallas’s Cat, Siberian Ibex, Pallas’s Pika and other mammal species.  Bird possibilities include Bearded Vulture, Saker Falcon and Pallas’s Sandgrouse.  The accommodation for the most part is in traditional Mongolian yurts.  The weather will typically be cold in the 20s Fahrenheit, the rooms are well heated by wood stoves.  On arrival and departure and for one night in between camps, we will be in standard hotels.  This is the best time of year to photograph Snow Leopards as they are still fairly low, but the weather, although cold, is starting to warm up some.  Another advantage of photographing Snow Leopards in Mongolia is you are at manageable altitudes of 6,000 to 8,000 feet as opposed to India where you are often around 14,000 feet elevation.  For the Eagle Hunters Extension, we will be staying in a nice hotel in Ulgii and then going out during the days to photograph different families of eagle hunters.
  • Spend 4 full days in the Altai Mountain with a good chance to photograph Snow Leopard from a hide.

  • We spend five days and 4 nights in the Margaz Mountains which are good for a variety of wildlife including Snow Leopards, Pallas’s Cat, Siberian Ibex, Pallas’s Pika and other mammal species.
  • Photograph raptors and beautiful mountain landscapes.

  • On the extension photograph hunters with their Golden Eagles.

March 9th-11th – We will have 3 full days of exploring the Margaz Mountains.  This is the beat location to see and photograph the amazing Pallas’s Cat on our tour.  We will be on the lookout for it as well as Snow Leopards, Corsac and Red Foxes and Siberian Ibex.  This part of the tour requires a reasonable amount of fitness as we will need to go on walks of up to a few kilometers to see and photograph the wildlife in this region. Accommodation: Yurt Camp in Margaz Mountains.

March 12th – We will have a morning photography session, birds in the area include Hill Pigeon, Pallas’s Sandgrouse and a variety of snowfinches, larks and accentors.  We will then check out and have a about a five-hour transfer back to Ulaangom, where we will spend the night in a nice hotel.  Accommodation: A nice hotel in Ulaangom.

March 14th-17th – We will have four full days of photography in the Altai, our trackers and guides will be out searching for Snow Leopard kills and when they find one they set up a hide for us which allows us to get closer and limits the amount of walking we have to do.  The Leopards return to their kill to feed, often a Red Fox or two will find the carcass as well.  We will be on the lookout for raptors such as the impressive Bearded Vulture and Saker Falcon.  Some of the birds in the area include Red-billed Chough and Altai Snowcock.  Accommodation: Yurt Camp in the Altai
