ABOUT Utqiagvik PHOTO WORKSHOP

Utqiagvik, Alaska formerly known as Barrow, sits at the top of Alaska on the edge of the Arctic Ocean.  It’s the best location to photograph all four eider species (Spectacled, King, Steller’s and Common) in one area.  In addition, it’s a great location for loons especially Arctic and Pacific as well as sometimes Yellow-billed.  It’s also a good location for other difficult species such as Red Phalarope, Buff-breasted and Pectoral Sandpipers as well as a lot of other arctic species.  The landscapes are beautiful and mammals such as Arctic Fox are regularly photographed.  But our main targets are breeding birds.

Itinerary

June 28th – Arrival to Utqiagvik, transfer to the King Eider Hotel.  Evening photography session.

June 29th-July 3rd – We will have five full days of bird photography on the tundra.  Our first targets are of course the King, Spectacled, Steller’s and Common Eiders, as well as the three loon species (Arctic, Pacific and Yellow-billed).    It’s also a very good location for shorebirds, likely species include Buff-breasted, Pectoral and Western Sandpipers as well as American Golden Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones and both Red and Red-necked Phalaropes.  Long-tailed and Parasitic Jaegers, Rock Ptarmigans, Long-tailed Ducks and Common Terns are other species we should photograph.  Among the small birds, beautiful Snow Buntings and Lapland Longspurs in breeding plumage stand out.  Each day will feature morning sessions, a mid-day rest and then an afternoon/evening session, there is light for 24 hours a day so expect plenty of shooting time.  We will of course be on the lookout for mammals such as Arctic and Red Fox, Musk Oxen and Arctic Ground Squirrels.  The landscapes are stunning.  We stay at the highly rated King Eider Inn.  Ken and one other leader will help you get great images of these species.  Hotel: King Eider Inn

July 4th – One more morning photography session followed by check out and transfer to the airport for your return trip home.
