BALD EAGLE PHOTO WORKSHOP

We will photograph a wide variety of subjects on this photo workshop including Bald Eagles, Tufted Puffins, Orcas, Red Foxes and many more species. We will have 3 mornings photographing Bald Eagles as they feed on stranded fish at low tide on Hood Canal, WA. This is the best spot I’ve been to for photographing eagles with a lot of interaction between the eagles and interaction between herons and eagles. We’ll have access to both public and private tidelands for shooting. We will also spend 2 days on San Juan Island which also has excellent Bald Eagle photography and families of Red Fox which are not shy. On San Juan Island we take a boat trip to photograph Orcas, Red Foxes and seabirds. Ken will give presentations on photographing birds in the wild and using flash in bird photography. In the evenings we will do image reviews and critique.
Maximum Participants: 5 photographers.
Equipment: A minimum of a 300mm lens or a 200mm plus teleconverters and a digital slr. We have some lenses and bodies available to be lent out.
Cost and Logistics
$3,595 includes lodging, transportation, instruction, guiding and boat trips, It does not include most meals. Single supplement $400. The fee for a nonphotographer spouse is $1,900.
If you are coming from out of town fly into the Seattle/Tacoma international airport. We will pick you up and take you to a hotel in Bremerton, WA. We will spend 3 nights at the Best Western Plus Beach Hotel in Silverdale, WA and 2 nights at a nice hotel in Sequim, WA. We will drive you to and from the shooting sites. If you live in the area and would like to stay in your home and meet us at the shooting sites that works too.
Itinerary
May 21st – Fly into the Seattle area during the day or the day before. We will either pick you up or arrange a shuttle to the hotel. At 5pm we will have a 2 hour presentation and photography discussion on photographing birds featuring Ken’s photography. We will have dinner together and return to the hotel. May 22nd – We will have a morning session photographing the Bald Eagles and Herons at Hood Canal. In the afternoon we will visit a local songbird feeding station that attracts a variety of birds including Pileated Woodpecker. Hotel: Best Western, Silverdale, WA
May 23rd – This morning we will drive out to Hood Canal to photograph the eagles. There will be about a 5 hour photo session with the eagles. This is the only place that I’ve seen regular confrontations between herons and eagles which make for great photo opportunities. For those interested in working on hand holding a long lens for flight shots it’s an excellent location with plenty of subjects to practice on. In addition to the eagles there are lots of Great Blue Herons, Glaucous-winged Gulls and nesting Purple Martins in the area. The location is beautiful as well with opportunities for landscapes and birdscapes as well as the portraits. After lunch we will return to the hotel and check out driving and then taking a ferry to Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands. We will do a bit of Bald Eagle and Red Fox photography in the late afternoon. Hotel: Friday Harbor, WA
May 24th – This morning we will photograph Red Foxes, Bald Eagles and other birds on San Juan Island. In the afternoon we will have a 4-5 hour boat trip to photograph Orcas, Tufted Puffins, Rhinoceros Auklets and other seabirds and wildlife. This will a later afternoon shoot to take advantage of the best lighting. Hotel: Friday Harbor, WA
May 25th – This morning we will spend photographing the Red Foxes, Bald Eagles and other birds on San Juan Island, then we will check out, take the ferry and scenic drive back down through Whidbey Island and then visit a Pigeon Guillimot colony near Port Townsend. Then we will return to the Best Western in Silverdale, WA. In the late afternoon we will review images and have a presentation on using flash for bird photography or you can rest and download images. May 26th – We have one more morning photographing the eagles and then we will give you a ride or arrange a shuttle back to the Seattle-Tacoma airport for your return flight home. You will go home with a lot of great images and having learned a lot from Ken.
