ABOUT ECUADOR MULTI-FLASH HUMMINGBIRD WORKSHOP
- Photograph spectacular hummingbird species such as Violet-tailed and Long-tailed Sylph, Booted Rackettail, Velvet-purple Coronet and many others in flight on our multi-flash hummingbird setups.
- Photograph a lot of other great species such as Masked Trogon, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Moss,backed and Glistening-green Tanagers, Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and many more.
- This workshop is limited to 4 photographers and we will have at least 12 multi-flash sessions to help you get as many amazing hummingbird images as possible.
- We will do multi-flash hummingbird photography at 5 different locations, giving you the opportunity to photograph many hummingbird species in flight.

Itinerary
March 2nd – Arrival to Ecuador, transfer to Zaysant Ecolodge, if we have time a bit of bird photography on the lodge grounds. Black-tailed Trainbearer and Vermillion Flycatcher are two resident species. Zaysant Ecolodge
March 3rd – We check out and stop for a morning photography session at Alambi Lodge (non multi-flash). The gardens here attract some species like Little Woodstar and Tawny-bellied Hermit that are unlikely at the other locations. There are also good numbers of Brown Violetear, White-necked Jacobin and Rufous-tailed Hummingbird. Then we continue on to Sachatamia Lodge. This lodge has a dedicated hummingbird multi-flash area and we will have our first multi-flash session there this afternoon. There are usually good numbers of the spectacular Violet-tailed Sylph here. Sachatamia Lodge
March 4th – We will have an early morning in the blind at Sachatamia photographing birds like Masked Trogon and Woodcreepers, the blind often attracts Long-wattled Umbrellabird, then we will have a morning multi-flash session. Booted Racketails, Velvet-purple Coronets, Fawn-breasted and Green-crowned Brilliants and Brown Incas are a few of the regular hummingbirds which come in. The fruit feeders nearby attract some flashy tanagers such as Flame-faced and Blue-winged Mountain Tanager. In the afternoon we will have another multi-flash hummingbird session. More hummingbirds here include Andean Emerald, Rufous-tailed Hummingbird, Purple-bibbed Whitetip and Purple-throated Woodstar
March 5th – This morning, we check out and visit another location, Birdwatcher’s House. Our morning multi-flash session will include some other species such as Gorgeted Sunangel, Buff-tailed Coronet, Speckled Hummingbird, Empress Brilliant and Lesser Violetear. The fruit feeders here are set at reflecting ponds, making beautiful shots of species such as Plate-billed Mountain Toucan possible, as well as a host of tanagers and other birds which visit the pools. After lunch we will head to our next location, Mashpi Amagusa Lodge. On the way we will stop at an Andean Cock-of-the-Rock lek. Mashpi Amagusa Lodge
March 6th – We have a full day doing multi-flash and shooting at the fruit feeders at Mashpi. New hummingbirds will likely include Green Thorntail and White-whiskered Hermit, while there will be more Violet-tailed Sylphs, Velvet-purple Coronets and Andean Emeralds. The fruit feeders here attract some special birds such as Moss-backed and Glistening-green Tanagers as well as Golden-collared Honeycreeper. Mashpi Amagusa Lodge
March 7th – Morning multi-flash and fruit feeders at Mashpi. Sometimes the endangered Rose-faced Parrots can be photographed near the lodge as well as the elusive Black Solitare. In the afternoon we will transfer to Zaysant Lodge for the evening.
March 8th – We will stop at Guango Lodge (non multi-flash) to photograph the numerous Chestnut-breasted Coronets and Tourmaline Sunangels and Long-tailed Sylphs, we also have a chance for Sword-billed Hummingbird here, then we will continue on to a location near Baeza where we will do multi-flash photography for the Booted Racketail (orange-booted race), Sparkling Violetear, Bronzy Inca and others. Our lodging for the night will be Rio Qujose Lodge.
March 9th – We will have a full day photographing at Rio Quijose Lodge. On the multi-flash species likely include Green-backed Hillstar, Violet-fronted Brilliant, Long-tailed Sylph, Speckled Hummingbird and more. The fruit feeders attract Highland Motmots, Red-headed Barbets, Inca Jays, Russet-backed Oropendolas and several tanager species. White-throated Quail Dove comes to the corn feeder. Rio Quijose Lodge
March 10th – We will have another morning multi-flash hummingbird photography session and photograph in the garden. On the trails here sometimes Andean Cock-of-the-Rock and Sunbittern can be found. After lunch we will head out back over Papallacta Pass, having a look for Spectacled Bear and highland birds before arriving back at Zaysant Ecoloege.
March 11th – Transfer to the airport for your return trip home.
AMAZON TOPAZ EXTENSION
This extension focuses on trying to get good images of one of the most striking hummingbirds in the world, the Fiery Topaz. This species visits a small rainforest pool each afternoon so that’s where we will head on 3 afternoons. Mornings will be filled with photography of other Amazonian birds such as Hoatzin as well as a morning and afternoon at San Isidro Lodge.

Itinerary
March 10th – Those going on the extension will stay at Rio Quijose while Javier brings the participants not going back to Quito. There are plenty of hummingbirds, tanagers, jays, motmots and more to photograph at the feeders.
March 11th – Javier will return before lunch (you can spend the morning photographing at the feeders or exploring the trails) and then the group will head down into the Amazon basin, driving through beautiful scenery on the east side of the Andes Mountains. We will arrive to the Amazon region in time to take our first trip to the Fiery Topaz location. This is a low light situation with typically slow shutter speeds and high isos. Lodge: A nice ecolodge in MIsahualli.
March 12th and 13th – Each morning will be spent photographing various birds. We will take a boat trip to photograph Hoatzin, on the trip we often find roosting Potoos and/or Owls. There is a small canopy tower at our lodge with feeders which attract birds such as Masked Crimson Tanager. Birds such as Tityras, Woodpeckers and Parrots can be photographed from the tower also. Each afternoon will be spent at the location often frequented by the spectacular Fiery Topaz. We will stay at a nice ecolodge in Misahualli.
March 14th – This morning, we will head back into the Andes foothills and stay at San isidro Lodge. This beautiful lodge has many bird species. In the afternoon we will photograph at the hummingbird feeders. The following species frequent them: Chestnut-breasted Coronet, Fawn-breasted and Violet-fronted Brilliants, Long-tailed Sylph, Collared and Bronzy Incas, Geoffroy’s Daggerbill and Tawny-bellied Hermit. In the evening, we will look for the highland form of Black-banded Owl (San Isidro Owl) which frequents the area. San Isidro Lodge
March 15th – We will view the morning feeding of the White-breasted Antpitta and then we will photograph the many species of birds which are attracted to the lights in the morning to feed on insects such as Inca Jay, Masked Trogon, Crimson-mantled Woodpecker and many others. After lunch we will check out head back to Zaysant Ecolodge near the airport.
March 16th – Transfer to the airport for your return trip home.

He built the excellent photo blinds at Sachatamia Lodge in Ecuador. He is an excellent photographer who is using flash in innovative ways.
