AMAZON WILDLIFE PHOTO TOUR

This photo tour visits 4 different lodges in the Tambopota Amazon region of Peru.  The biodiversity in the area is amazing.  Some of the highlights include the Chuncho Parrot and Macaw clay lick where 3 large species of Macaw can usually be photographed on the same morning, many primates including the amazing Emperor Tamarin, a lodge which has hummingbird leks which attract difficult species like the Pale-tailed Barbthroat and the extraordinary Hoatzin and Sandoval Lake Lodge where boat trips include photography of Giant Otters, Kingfishers and likely the beautiful Agami Heron.  This tour is moderate in terms of physical difficulty.  There is much to photograph right around the lodges but some of the best photo opportunities require some walking and there is a two mile flat walk to get to Sandoval Lake Lodge (our guides will carry your bags and gear).

Cost and Logistics

Itinerary

June 25th – Arrival to Puerto Maldonado, transfer to Wasai Ecolodge. We will do a bit of bird photography at the lodge feeders.  Wasai Ecolodge.

June 26th – This morning we will transfer to  Los Amigos Biological Station.  We have a three hour boat ride up river to get to the lodge. The amazing Emperor Tamarin is easily photographed in the garden here.  This is a great location for monkeys as nine species are possible including Spider and Monk Saki Monkeys. Lodge: Los Amigos Biological Station

June 27th – A full day of photography at Los Amigos.  Some of the other great birds which can be found here include Pavonine Quetzal, Black-faced Cotinga, White-throated Jacamar, Pale-winged Trumpeter and Golden-collared Toucanet.  Lodge: Los Amigos Biological Station

June 28th – Morning photography at the lodge. Some of the hummingbirds which can be photographed near the lodge are Pale-tailed Barbet, Reddish and White-bearded Hermits and Long-billed Starfrontlet.  Then we will transfer to Chuncho Lodge again with a three hour boat trip to get there.  The lodge has an area where you can photograph Capuchin and Squirrel Monkeys as well as Saddleback Tamarins. Hotel: Chuncho Lodge

June 29th and 30th – 2 full days of photography at Chuncho.  Each morning we will take a boat trip to visit the Chuncho Macaw clay lick.  Several species of parrots are here as well as the 3 large macaws, Red and Green, Scarlet and Blue and Gold.  Sometimes all 3 can be photographed at the same time on the lick.  On the boat trips up and down the river many other species will be photographed including Orinoco Goose and White Caiman.  Jaguar sightings are possible on these boat trips.  Chuncho Lodge also has a tower where you can get above the canopy and photograph birds.  The lodge has lantana stands which attract Butterfly Coquette, Reddish Hermits and Fork-tailed Woodnymphs.  Lodge: Chuncho Lodge

July 1st – Morning photography at Chuncho followed by transfer to Sandoval Lake Lodge.    We have about a two mile walk into the lodge, the guides and hotel staff will carry your bags. This lodge is situated right on an oxbow lake where Horned Screamers, Capped Herons, Hoatzin, Kingfishers and many other birds can be photographed.  Lodge: Sandoval Lake Lodge

July 2nd and 3rd – Two full days of photography at Sandoval Lake Lodge.  Giant Otters and Agami Herons are both often photographed on the lake.  Blue and Gold Macaws can usually be found near the lodge.  Sandoval Lake Lodge

July 4th – Morning photography at Lake Sandoval Lodge followed by afternoon transfer back to Wasai Ecolodge in Puerto Maldonado.

July 5th  – This morning we will go to the best available photography opportunity within close range of Puerto Maldonado.  Sometimes this is a forest (Harpy or Crested) Eagle nest, sometimes it’s more parrot photography with a visit to a spot where Blue-headed Macaw often comes down.  Then check out and transfer to the Puerto Maldonado airport for your trip home.  If you need us to book internal flights back to Cusco or Lima and/or hotel rooms there we are happy to do so.
